Canvas Support for Testing and Evaluation Instructors
The service for scanning and reporting optical-mark answer sheets, also referred to as Scantrons, will no longer be offered by the Office of the University Registrar after May 31, 2023.
Why this change? Since the pandemic, client involvement in the Testing & Evaluation unit's services has dramatically decreased, and the product is no longer generating enough demand to cover the support and maintenance required. Instructors have turned to Canvas which provides a modern, efficient, and robust platform for testing.
What should I do now? There is no need to take immediate action, as the service will continue through the end of the Spring 2023 semester. We encourage Emory instructors who currently use the Testing & Evaluation Service to explore the assessment options in Canvas—including Classic Quizzes and New Quizzes—and plan as you prepare for future courses.
- Teaching and Learning Technologies’ Canvas Support team has started this guide for T&E users and a Canvas Quizzes resource site, both of which will continue to be updated.
- Educational Analysts are always available for one-on-one Canvas appointments, click here to schedule an appointment if you wish to discuss how you might use Canvas.
- We will be in touch later in the year with additional resources and training opportunities to help you successfully transition from the T&E service.

What will happen to exam results records?
Scantrons and scanned images of Scantrons are considered “Student Work Product,” which includes examinations, quizzes, homework, term papers, and essays. Per the Records and Management Policy 5.21, T&E will retain student materials for one year after course completion and will confidentially destroy, and exam results data will be destroyed after this time, and a certificate of destruction will be issued.
If you need more information regarding Emory’s Records Management policies, please visit the Records Management site.
